3 Introduction: A Smarter Way to Care for Your Skin Buying skincare can quickly become confusing. One advert recommends a new serum, another promises dramatic results, and a social-media video makes a ten-step routine look essential. Before long, you may have spent money on products without knowing what they do—or whether your skin needs them. This book takes a simpler approach. You do not need a shelf full of products or flawless skin to care for yourself well. What matters is understanding your skin, protecting its natural barrier, choosing products with care, and finding a routine you can realistically keep up. This book is written for people of different genders, ages, skin tones, budgets, and levels of skincare experience. The basics apply to many people, but there is no single routine that suits everyone. Children and teenagers may need age-appropriate guidance from a parent or guardian and a healthcare professional, particularly before using strong or active ingredients. Three principles to keep in mind Keep the basics simple: cleanse gently when needed, moisturise when your skin needs it, and protect exposed skin from the sun. Make changes slowly. Try one new product at a time and follow the directions on its label. Adding more products does not guarantee better results. Choose products for their purpose, evidence, how well your skin tolerates them, and their value—not because of hype, attractive packaging, a high price, or bold promises. You can start with just a few well-chosen products. A routine that fits your skin, budget, and daily life is more useful than a complicated one you struggle to maintain. Chapter 1: Understand Your Skin Skin type and skin condition are not the same Skin type describes a general pattern; a skin concern can change with time, weather, hormones, medicines, or products. For example, skin can be oily but dehydrated, dry and prone to breakouts, or temporarily sensitive after using an irritating product. One label rarely tells the whole story. Common skin types Oily skin Skin may look shiny, especially around the forehead, nose, and chin. Choose a gentle cleanser and consider lightweight moisturisers. Avoid harsh scrubbing or repeatedly washing to remove every trace of oil; irritation can make skin feel worse. Dry skin Skin may feel tight, rough, flaky, or uncomfortable. A gentle cleanser and a richer fragrance-free moisturiser may help. Applying moisturiser after washing, while skin is still slightly damp, can help hold water in the skin. Combination skin Some areas, often the centre of the face, may be oily while cheeks or other areas feel dry. You can use different textures on different areas rather than forcing one product to do everything.

4 Sensitive or reactive skin Skin may sting, burn, itch, or become red easily. These symptoms can have different causes. Keep the routine simple, consider fragrance-free products, and introduce new products cautiously. Persistent reactions deserve professional assessment. A simple self-observation exercise Wash with a gentle cleanser, then pat dry without rubbing. Wait a short period without applying products. Notice whether your skin feels tight, looks shiny, or feels comfortable. Repeat observations on different days. Weather, hormones, medicines, and recent products can affect what you notice. Use these observations as a starting point, not as a diagnosis. Skin tone is not the same as skin type. People with every skin tone can experience dryness, oiliness, acne, irritation, eczema, and pigmentation. Advice should account for both the person's concern and their individual skin. Chapter 2: Build a Simple Daily Routine The morning routine Cleanse gently if needed. Some people with dry or sensitive skin may prefer rinsing with water in the morning and cleansing later; choose what suits your skin. Apply a moisturiser if your skin needs it. Select a texture that feels comfortable and does…
