Chapter one. The ultimatum The phone call lasted exactly twelve seconds, and in that time, my entire life turned to ash. My brother, Liam, was sobbing on the other end, his voice muffled by the sound of heavy boots hitting concrete. Behind him, a man with a voice like grinding gravel told me I had forty-eight hours to clear Leo’s "debt" or collect his body parts. I didn't have the money. I didn't have the influence. I only had a name. Matteo Wood. The man who owned this city, the man whose shadow stretched long enough to blot out the sun. They called him the Iron King, a ruthless billionaire who treated human beings like commodities on a stock exchange. I stood outside his obsidian-glass skyscraper, the wind whipping my hair into a frenzy. My hands shook as I smoothed the cheap fabric of my dress. I looked like a waitress who had wandered into a predator’s den, which was exactly what I was. Security didn't even stop me. It was as if they had been expecting a desperate girl to show up at midnight. The elevator hummed, a sleek, silent climb toward the penthouse that felt like a descent into the underworld. When the doors slid open, the penthouse smelled of expensive scotch and cold iron. He was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the city lights as if he were deciding which building to buy next. He didn’t turn around when I entered. "You’re late, Celeste," he said, his voice a low, melodic thrum that vibrated in my chest. "How do you know my name?" I managed to choke out, my throat tight with fear. He finally turned. His eyes were the color of flint, sharp and utterly devoid of warmth. He was devastatingly handsome in a way that felt dangerous, like a razor blade hidden inside a velvet glove. "I know everything that happens in my territory," Matteo said, walking toward me with the predatory grace of a panther. "I know about your brother’s gambling debts, and I know why you’re here." "I need your help," I whispered, hating how small I sounded. "I can’t pay them. They’re going to kill him." He stopped inches from me, his presence overwhelming. He smelled of cedar and something sharp, like ozone before a storm. He reached out, his long fingers grazing my jawline, tilting my head back so I had to look into those frigid, calculating eyes.
"I don't do charity, Celeste," he said, his thumb tracing the pulse point in my neck. "Everything in my world has a price, and my help is the most expensive thing you will ever buy." "Name it," I replied, my voice steadier than I felt. "Anything." A ghost of a smirk played on his lips, though his eyes remained cold. He wasn't looking at me; he was looking through me, calculating my worth. "I need a wife," he said, the words hitting the air like a physical blow. "My board of directors is pushing for stability, and the public image of a reckless playboy is beginning to hinder my acquisitions." I froze. "You want me to marry you?" "I want a display of domesticity for six months," he corrected, his hand dropping to his side. "In exchange, your brother’s debts are wiped clean, and he will be under my personal protection. Permanently." My mind raced through the horror of the alternative. If I said no, Leo would be dead by dawn. If I said yes, I was selling my soul to the man everyone claimed had none. "Is that all?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "A marriage of convenience?" "That is exactly what it is," Matteo said, walking past me toward a mahogany desk. He picked up a pen and pushed a thick stack of legal documents across the leather surface. "No love, no messy emotions, and absolutely no interference in my private life." I walked to the desk, my legs feeling like lead. I picked up the pen, the weight of it feeling like a death warrant. "Sign, Celeste," he commanded, his back turned to me. "Or walk out that door and tell your brother goodbye." I didn't hesitate. I signed my name at the bottom of every page, the ink bleeding into the paper like spilled blood. The deal was done. I had traded my freedom to keep my brother breathing, stepping into a trap I knew I would never escape. Matteo turned back, watching me with that unreadable, hollow stare. "Welcome to the woods estate, Mrs. wood," he said, his voice cold enough to freeze the air. "I suggest you learn your place quickly."
Chapter two A Marriage of Convenience The silence in Matteo’s office was not merely an absence of sound; it was a physical weight, pressurized and thick with the scent of ozone and expensive leather. Celeste stood before the mahogany desk, a monolith of dark wood that felt less like furniture and more like a sacrificial altar. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city of New York shimmered, a sprawling grid of golden light that felt miles away, unreachable from this fortress of shadows. Matteo sat in his high-backed chair, a silhouette of sharp angles and predatory stillness. He didn't offer her a seat. He didn't offer her a drink. He simply watched her, his grey eyes tracing the line of her throat, the tension in her shoulders, the way her knuckles were white where she gripped the strap of her bag. "The terms are exactly as we discussed," Matteo said, his voice a low, melodic baritone that betrayed nothing of his thoughts. He tapped a finger against the heavy cream-colored document resting on the blotter. "Six months. You exist as my wife in the public eye, in the private sphere, and in every capacity my interests require. In return, the Obsidian Hand’s ledger will be scrubbed. Your brother ceases to exist on their radar." Celeste took a steadying breath, though it felt as if she were inhaling shards of glass. She looked at the paper—the document that would officially annex her soul. "And Liam? Where will he be?" "In a place where he cannot be reached, and more importantly, where he cannot be stupid," Matteo replied, his lip curling into a ghost of a smirk. "He’s being relocated to a private facility in the Alps. Safe. Educated. Monitored. He will be kept away from the debris of his own poor choices until his debts are paid in full—by your presence here, not by his failures." Celeste’s stomach turned, a cold, hollow ache settling in the pit of it. She walked forward, the tap of her heels against the polished obsidian floor sounding like a ticking clock. She reached the desk, her hand trembling as she reached for the gold-plated fountain pen lying atop the document. "I need your word," she whispered, her voice cracking. "That this... this isn't just a way to toy with me. That when the six months are up, I am truly free. And Liam is, too." Matteo stood, moving with the fluid, calculated grace of a predator. He was taller than she realized, his presence effectively swallowing the light in the room. He…
