PERSONAL DELIVERANCE. A STEP BY STEP GUIDE ON PERSONAL DELIVERANCE. UMOH EDEM PREFACE. There are many people who attend church regularly, participate in prayers, listen to sermons, and confess their faith in Jesus Christ, yet continue to struggle with certain areas of their lives. Some struggle with fear, anger, bitterness, destructive habits, repeated failures, unhealthy relationships, guilt, spiritual confusion, and patterns of behaviour they desperately want to overcome. Others believe that certain family experiences, past mistakes, ancestral practices, spiritual oppression, or personal decisions have placed limitations on their lives. The question is: How can a Christian experience genuine freedom? Personal deliverance is an important subject that every believer should understand. Deliverance is not simply about shouting during prayer, attending special programmes, or looking for someone to pray for us. It involves understanding what Christ has accomplished, responding to God's Word, rejecting what is contrary to God's will, and learning to live in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The Bible declares in John 8:36: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." This declaration establishes an important foundation: Jesus Christ is the foundation of genuine freedom. This book is not written to create fear, encourage suspicion, or make believers attribute every difficulty to demonic activity. Rather, it is written to equip Christians with biblical understanding, spiritual discipline, practical wisdom, and

confidence in God's power. My desire is that every reader will discover the truth of God's Word, recognise areas requiring transformation, and learn how to walk consistently in the freedom available through Jesus Christ. May this book become a practical spiritual resource for individuals, families, churches, and everyone seeking a deeper understanding of personal deliverance. INTRODUCTION. Understanding the Meaning of Personal Deliverance. What does it really mean to be delivered? Is deliverance only about casting out demons? Does it mean freedom from ancestral problems? Can a Christian need deliverance? Why do some people pray repeatedly about the same problem without experiencing lasting change? These questions deserve biblical answers. Personal deliverance refers to the process of experiencing freedom through Jesus Christ from spiritual bondage, sinful practices, destructive patterns, oppressive influences, fear, deception, and everything that hinders a person's relationship with God and the fulfilment of His purpose. Deliverance begins with recognising that humanity needs God's intervention. Romans 3:23 teaches that all have sinned and fall short of God's glory. Romans 6:23 explains that the wages of sin is death, but God's gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ. The greatest deliverance is therefore deliverance from sin and its consequences through Christ. However, the Christian journey also involves overcoming temptation, resisting the devil, renewing the mind, healing from painful experiences, forgiving others, and developing godly character. James 4:7 gives believers a practical instruction:

CHAPTER SEVEN: Dealing with Sinful Habits and Destructive Patterns CHAPTER EIGHT: Understanding Family Background, Ancestral Practices, and Generational Influences CHAPTER NINE: The Power of Forgiveness in Personal Deliverance CHAPTER TEN: The Renewal of the Mind: Transforming Your Thinking CHAPTER ELEVEN: Overcoming Spiritual Attacks Through Prayer and God's Word CHAPTER TWELVE: Breaking Free from Unhealthy Relationships and Negative Influences CHAPTER THIRTEEN: The Holy Spirit and the Lifestyle of Freedom CHAPTER FOURTEEN: Practical Steps to Maintaining Your Deliverance CHAPTER FIFTEEN: Walking in Lasting Freedom and Fulfilling God's Purpose CONCLUSION: Your Life Beyond Bondage PERSONAL DELIVERANCE PRAYERS CHAPTER ONE. UNDERSTANDING PERSONAL DELIVERANCE. 1.1 What Is Personal Deliverance? Personal deliverance is one of the important subjects every Christian should understand. It concerns the freedom, transformation, and restoration that God makes available to humanity through Jesus Christ. Many people desire freedom from situations they do not fully understand. Some struggle with persistent sinful habits, fear, spiritual oppression, destructive relationships, guilt, bitterness, unhealthy family practices, and personal decisions that continue to affect their lives. Others attend church regularly, participate in prayer meetings,

fast, read the Bible, and listen to sermons, yet still experience difficulties in certain areas of their Christian journey. This raises an important question: What does it mean to be genuinely delivered, and how can a person experience lasting freedom? Personal deliverance is the process of experiencing freedom through Jesus Christ from spiritual bondage, sinful practices, destructive patterns, deception, oppressive influences, and other conditions that hinder a person's relationship with God and spiritual development. It involves more than praying against problems. It requires understanding God's Word, identifying areas that need correction, accepting responsibility, exercising faith, and making decisions that agree with God's will. Deliverance is not simply about what happens during a prayer session. It is also about what happens when the prayer session is over. A person may receive prayer today, but must still learn to resist temptation tomorrow. Someone may receive encouragement today, but must still develop the discipline to maintain a godly lifestyle. Another person may experience emotional relief but still need to address destructive habits that contributed to the problem. This is why personal deliverance must be understood as both an experience of God's intervention and a continuing journey of spiritual transformation. ### Deliverance Begins with Jesus Christ The foundation of Christian deliverance is Jesus Christ. In Luke 4:18, Jesus declared: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives..." This passage reveals an important dimension of Christ's ministry. He came to bring freedom, healing, restoration, and hope to humanity.

Jesus did not come merely to improve people's outward appearance. He came to address the deeper problems of human existence, particularly sin and separation from God. Through His death and resurrection, He provided the way for humanity to be reconciled to God. Colossians 1:13 says: "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son." This scripture establishes that deliverance is rooted in God's saving work through Christ. A Christian must therefore understand that deliverance is not about becoming dependent on a particular preacher, prayer mountain, spiritual object, or religious personality. Our confidence must remain in Jesus Christ. ### Deliverance Is More Than Casting Out Demons One of the common misunderstandings about deliverance is the belief that every personal problem must be caused by an evil spirit. Although Scripture recognises demonic activity, spiritual opposition, and the authority of Jesus over evil spirits, it also teaches believers to examine other causes of human difficulties. For example: * A person struggling with anger may need to develop emotional discipline. * Someone battling addiction may need spiritual support and professional treatment. * A person experiencing bitterness may need to practise forgiveness. * Someone facing financial difficulties may need better financial decisions and practical planning.

* A person struggling with fear may need biblical encouragement, emotional support, and appropriate professional care. Not every challenge is demonic. Spiritual maturity involves knowing when to pray, when to repent, when to change personal behaviour, when to seek counsel, and when to obtain professional assistance. A balanced understanding of deliverance protects believers from unnecessary fear and spiritual confusion. ### The Difference Between Deliverance and Salvation Salvation and deliverance are closely connected, but they are not identical in every context. Salvation is God's work of rescuing humanity from sin and reconciling people to Himself through Jesus Christ. Deliverance can refer more broadly to God's intervention in freeing people from various forms of bondage, oppression, danger, and destructive conditions. Romans 10:9 teaches that whoever confesses Jesus as Lord and believes that God raised Him from the dead shall be saved. When someone receives Christ, that person enters a new relationship with God. However, becoming a Christian does not mean that every struggle, temptation, emotional wound, or unhealthy habit automatically disappears. The believer must continue growing in grace, knowledge, obedience, and spiritual maturity. This explains why Christians are encouraged to renew their minds, resist temptation, forgive others, and walk in the Spirit. ### Personal Deliverance Requires Personal Responsibility Another important truth is that personal deliverance requires personal participation.

God provides grace, but believers must respond to His Word. For example, someone praying for freedom from dishonesty must also make a decision to practise truthfulness. A person praying against bitterness must become willing to forgive. Someone asking God to deliver them from destructive relationships must be prepared to establish appropriate boundaries. A person seeking freedom from addictive behaviour may need to remove certain triggers, seek accountability, and obtain professional support. Prayer must be accompanied by responsible action. James 2:17 teaches that faith without works is dead. This does not mean that human effort purchases God's deliverance. Rather, genuine faith produces a willingness to obey God and make necessary changes. A person cannot consistently pray for freedom while deliberately protecting the very behaviour that keeps them in bondage. ### Personal Deliverance Is a Journey, Not Just an Event Some people measure deliverance by what happens during a powerful church service. They may associate it with crying, shouting, falling, trembling, or other outward manifestations. However, outward manifestations alone do not establish lasting spiritual freedom. The more important question is what happens afterwards. Does the individual become more obedient to God? Does the person develop self-control? Does the individual abandon sinful practices?

Is there growth in love, patience, humility, and forgiveness? Is the person's relationship with God becoming stronger? These are important questions because Christian transformation must affect everyday living. Philippians 2:12 encourages believers to work out their salvation with fear and trembling. The Christian life involves daily cooperation with God's grace. Deliverance should therefore lead to a more responsible, disciplined, and Christ-centred lifestyle. ### 1.2 Why…
