Ògún
About This Book
This is the complete story of Ògún, the Yorùbá òrìṣà of iron — told from beginning to end, as one continuous narrative, with the scholarship named at every turn and nothing smoothed over.
THE WHOLE STORY, NOT A SUMMARY
Eighteen chapters carry the ìtàn from the assembly in Ọ̀run to the foundries of today: the descent, the wall of bush, the cutting of the road, the first fire, the giving away of iron, the question of the crown, the founding of Ìrè, the silent assembly, the killing, Ẹlẹ́pẹ̀ and the roasted yam, the oath, the sword driven into the ground — and the crossing to Haiti, Brazil and Cuba.
After every movement there is a section headed WHERE THIS COMES FROM, which names the exact source and sets out the versions that disagree. Was Ògún king at Ìrè, or was his son? Did he seize the throne at Ifẹ̀, refuse it, or lose it? Was he enraged by a broken silence or an empty palm-wine calabash? The corpus genuinely conflicts, and this book shows you the joins instead of hiding them.
INSIDE THIS BOOK
- SIXTY ROADS OF ÒGÚN — one to a page, each with its meaning, its oríkì in Yorùbá with the English underneath, the offering, what to call it for, and what never to do with it.
- THE SIXTEEN ODÙ MÉJÌ — drawn as they are marked on the ọpọ́n Ifá, each read for Ògún, with Ògúndá Méjì, his own sign.
- FORTY-FIVE WORKINGS — work, the road, money, protection, justice, anger, healing, endings and beginning again. Each gives the road, the time, the offering, the ọfọ̀ in Yorùbá and English, and a ruled page for the record.
- THE MASTER RITE IN TEN STEPS — including the step that belongs only to this òrìṣà: a hand laid flat on the iron, and the words irin kì í parọ́ — iron does not lie.
- THE FULL APPARATUS — alphabet and tones, the long oríkì, the shrine list, prayer index, glossary, record book, safety checklist, festival calendar and sources.
CORRECTIONS THE BOOK MAKES
"Ògún eats dog" is wrong at Ìrè, his own cult centre, where the offering is a ram — because a son worships his father with a ram. The Ògún–Ọ̀ṣọ́ọ̀sì pact is institutionally real in Cuba but has no Nigerian narrative source. Tuesday as his day is a diaspora assignment, not Yorùbá antiquity. Each of these is stated with its evidence.
WHAT IS NOT IN IT
No curses. No initiation secrets. No animal sacrifice. The chapter on oaths sworn on iron sets out, from the legal scholarship, how that practice is abused by traffickers — and what to do if it has been used against you.
SAFETY IS NOT AN AFTERTHOUGHT
The blade is greeted, never brandished, and never drawn in temper. Sober at both ends of the work. Cut away from the body. And the road figures are given plainly, because a devotee of Ògún who drives badly is not a devotee.
Printed in classic black and white, with sixty hand-drawn seals and a full set of plates.
