CHAPTER ONE THE REALITY OF ETERNITY There are moments in life when we become so occupied with the present that we forget to consider what lies beyond it. We work, build, plan, struggle, celebrate, and pursue our dreams, often giving little thought to the one destination every human being will eventually face: eternity. We prepare for school because we expect a future. We prepare for marriage because we expect a future. We save money for retirement because we expect a future. Yet, despite all our earthly preparations, many people give little attention to the greatest future of all—the future beyond this life. Eternity is not a religious theory created to frighten humanity. It is a reality revealed throughout the Word of God. Whether a person accepts it or rejects it, eternity remains real. The Bible declares: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27 (KJV) These words remind us that earthly life is not the end of our existence. Death brings our journey in this present world to an end, but Scripture teaches that what follows is eternal. This leads us to one of the most important questions any human being can ask: Where will I spend eternity? ETERNITY IS BEYOND THIS PRESENT LIFE Human beings naturally measure life by time. We count our days in hours, our years in birthdays, and our lives in seasons. Yet, no matter how long a person lives, earthly life remains temporary. The Bible describes the brevity of human existence: “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.” — Psalm 90:4 (KJV) James gives an equally powerful description: “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” — James 4:14 (KJV)
Our lives may seem long while we are living them, but eternity places our earthly years into their proper perspective. This does not mean that our time on earth is insignificant. Quite the opposite. Our earthly life is precious because what we do with it has eternal significance. Every day God gives us is an opportunity to know Him, respond to His grace, follow Jesus Christ, and prepare our hearts for what lies beyond this life. DEATH IS NOT THE END One of humanity's greatest misconceptions is the belief that death brings everything to an end. Jesus taught something very different. He spoke about resurrection, eternal life, judgment, heaven, and eternal punishment. He did not present death as the disappearance of human existence, but as the end of our earthly journey and the beginning of what Scripture reveals concerning eternity. Jesus declared: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” — John 11:25 (KJV) The resurrection of Jesus Christ stands at the heart of the Christian faith. Our hope is not based on human imagination or wishful thinking. It is founded upon Christ, who died, rose again, and conquered death. Because Christ lives, death does not have the final word. Because Christ lives, eternal life is possible. Because Christ lives, there is hope beyond the grave. WHY ETERNITY MUST MATTER TO US It is possible to become so absorbed in earthly responsibilities that we forget our eternal purpose. People spend their lives pursuing money, possessions, recognition, education, influence, comfort, and success. These things may have value when used properly, but none of them can secure the eternal destiny of a human soul. Jesus asked: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
— Mark 8:36 (KJV) This question reaches far beyond material wealth. A person may achieve great success and still be spiritually lost. A person may be celebrated on earth and yet be unprepared for eternity. What good is earthly achievement if the soul is lost? What value is temporary wealth if eternity is neglected? What does human applause matter if we have rejected the One before whom we will ultimately stand? This is why the condition of our soul is more important than the possessions we accumulate or the reputation we build. WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH TIME WE HAVE God has entrusted each of us with time, but He has not told us exactly how many days we have remaining. The psalmist prayed: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 (KJV) To number our days is to recognize their value. Every day is an opportunity to seek God. Every day is an opportunity to repent. Every day is an opportunity to forgive. Every day is an opportunity to love. Every day is an opportunity to serve. Every day is an opportunity to prepare for eternity. We should never treat tomorrow as though it were guaranteed. Life can change in a moment, and the opportunity we have today may not be available tomorrow. ETERNITY REQUIRES A DECISION The message of eternity is not simply information for us to consider. It demands a response. God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ, but each person must respond to His invitation. Jesus proclaimed:
“Repent ye, and believe the gospel.” — Mark 1:15 (KJV) Repentance means more than feeling sorry for our sins. It involves turning away from sin and turning toward God. It is a sincere change of heart that produces a changed direction in life. Many people say, “I will come to God later.” They assume there will always be another opportunity. But none of us has been promised tomorrow. The wisest time to prepare for eternity is today. LIVING WITH ETERNITY IN VIEW When eternity becomes real to us, it changes the way we see our lives. We begin to examine our hearts. We begin to consider whether our lives truly honor God. We begin to ask whether our faith is genuine and whether we are walking according to His Word. We begin to understand that our relationship with God is more important than the temporary things that compete for our attention. Paul wrote: “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.” — 2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV) The things we see are temporary. The things that belong to eternity are everlasting. This does not mean that we should abandon our responsibilities in this world. Instead, we should fulfill those responsibilities with an eternal perspective. Work, but remember eternity. Build, but remember eternity. Raise your family, but remember eternity. Serve others, but remember eternity. Live each day knowing that this world is not our final home. A CALL TO PREPARE Dear reader, eternity is real.
One day, every earthly opportunity will come to an end. The opportunity to repent will end. The opportunity to change direction will end. The opportunity to prepare will end. But if you are reading these words today, you still have an opportunity to respond to God. If you have wandered away from Him, return. If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, come to Him. If you have been living carelessly, examine your heart. If you have been postponing repentance, do not delay. The purpose of this book is not to condemn you. It is to awaken you—to turn your attention from the temporary things of this world toward the eternal reality that awaits every human being. Eternity is real. Heaven is real. Judgment is real. Salvation through Jesus Christ is real. And the decision you make concerning Christ matters. KEY WORDS / TOPICS Eternity • Eternal Destiny • Death • Judgment • Repentance • Salvation • Jesus Christ • Readiness PRAYER Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of life and for reminding me that my earthly journey is not the end. Help me to understand the reality of eternity and to live each day with wisdom and purpose. Search my heart and reveal anything in my life that is not pleasing to You. Give me grace to repent sincerely, follow Jesus Christ faithfully, and walk according to Your Word. Do not allow me to become so occupied with the things of this world that I forget my eternal destiny. Teach me to number my days and use my life for Your glory. Prepare my heart for eternity. Strengthen my faith, guide my steps, and help me remain faithful until the end. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
CHAPTER TWO THE TWO ETERNAL DESTINATIONS The reality of eternity leads us to another truth that cannot be ignored: every human being is moving toward an eternal destination. Life on earth gives us many choices. We choose where to live, what to study, what career to pursue, whom to marry, what to eat, and how to spend our time. Yet there is one decision far more important than all the others—the decision concerning where we will spend eternity. According to the Word of God, eternity is not the same destination for everyone. Scripture presents two ultimate realities: eternal life with God and eternal separation from God. Jesus spoke plainly about this truth because He loves humanity and desires that no one should perish. He said: “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” — Matthew 25:46 (KJV) These words of Jesus make the matter clear. There is everlasting punishment, and there is eternal life. Therefore, the question is not whether eternity exists. The question is where we will spend it. THE CHOICE BEFORE EVERY HUMAN BEING From the beginning, God has given humanity the responsibility to respond to Him. Moses spoke to the children of Israel and presented a choice: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.” — Deuteronomy 30:19 (KJV) Although this passage addressed Israel in its particular context, it reveals an important biblical principle: our response to God matters. Eternity is not something we should approach carelessly. We cannot afford to live as though every decision has only temporary consequences.
The world encourages people to focus on what can be seen and touched. God calls us to look beyond the present and consider what is everlasting. A person may spend decades building a successful life, but eventually that earthly life will end. At that point, wealth cannot purchase another day, influence cannot change the outcome, and human recognition cannot determine one's eternal destination. What matters then is our relationship with God. ETERNAL LIFE WITH GOD The Bible presents eternal life as God's gracious gift through Jesus Christ. Jesus said: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (KJV) Eternal life is not something humanity can earn through wealth, education, social status, or religious appearance. It comes through God's grace and is received through faith in Jesus Christ. This does not mean that our actions are unimportant. Genuine faith produces a life that increasingly reflects obedience to God. But salvation begins with God's grace, not human achievement. The apostle Paul wrote: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8 (KJV) Eternal life means more than simply living forever. It means reconciliation with God and fellowship with Him. It is the fulfillment of God's purpose for those who belong to Christ. Heaven is not merely a beautiful place where believers receive rewards. At the heart of heaven is the presence of God. The greatest hope of the believer is not merely escaping suffering. It is being forever with the Lord. ETERNAL SEPARATION FROM GOD The Bible also gives a solemn warning about the consequence of rejecting God. This is not a subject that should be treated lightly, nor should it be used merely to frighten people. Jesus Himself spoke about judgment because He wanted people to
understand the seriousness of their choices. Scripture speaks of a final judgment and of everlasting punishment for those who reject God.…
