THE ONES WHO STAY

ENOUGH When One Friend Can't Be Your Whole Proof That People Stay Vol 3

ADEFEMI

For anyone who's asked one person to be everything.

Chapter One: The Space She Asked For I give her the space she didn't quite ask for out loud but made clear enough with her back turned down that road. Three days of nothing. I don't call. I don't show up uninvited the way she used to for me, because some new, hard-won part of me finally understands what that costs when the other person isn't ready, and I owe her at least that much, even though every hour of the silence sits in my chest like something with edges. On the fourth day I send one message, small, no question mark, the same trick she taught me without meaning to. I'm sorry. Whenever you're ready. I'm not going anywhere. It goes grey and stays grey. I tell myself that's fair. I tell myself I did something to her that took months to undo the first time it happened in reverse, and months is a reasonable unit of time to expect this to take, and I should sit with that instead of rushing her toward a forgiveness she doesn't owe me on my schedule.

I still check the step every day at lunch. Habit, or hope, or whatever the difference actually is between those two things. On the sixth day, she's there. Relief moves through me so fast it's almost dizzying, half a second of pure, uncomplicated joy before I actually see the rest of the picture. She's not alone. There's a girl next to her I don't recognize, new enough that I'd remember her if I'd seen her before, sitting exactly where I usually sit, close in the easy, unguarded way that takes weeks to build normally, except apparently not always, apparently sometimes it just happens fast when the timing lines up right. Amaka's laughing at something. Really laughing, the kind that reaches her eyes, a kind I haven't gotten out of her since before her grandmother's collapse, since before any of this. She sees me standing at the bottom of the steps. The laugh doesn't stop, not right away, it just sort of eases down at the edges, and she gives me a small nod, polite, careful, the exact nod you give someone you're not sure yet how to be around.

I don't go up. I don't know what I'd be walking into if I did, whether there's room on that step for three, or whether I'd find out in front of a stranger that there isn't room for me there anymore at all. I turn around and eat lunch…
