To my late Dad, Mr. Azza James Wara Arikelio. You exposed me and my siblings to books at a tender age, though we couldn’t read the words. We admired the beautiful and colorful pictures in them which sparked the urge to know what the words really meant. This book is written in the loving memory of you, Dad. And to my future son, Paris. Learn from dad’s emotional bank. I love you so much.

It contains conversations between my mind, heart, and soul. As you read through the feathers of my thoughts, I hope you get something from my angels and demons. Even from the cries of men one can row a boat in life to prosperity and emotional purity.

I first encountered Daj2020 on a writing app called Wattpad a couple years before the very moment I pen this forward with joy and excitement. He entered “Emotions,” his poetry book, into an awards competition I hosted, along with secret

His book not only surprised me with its emotional candor, but he hooked me through his breathtaking skill to navigate through our worst fears and write them so eloquently. Poetry was what got me into writing when I was eight years old at the behest of my teacher Miss Mike at Pine-Villa Elementary in Miami (Goulds), Florida back in 1985. Even though I had no idea what a poem was she urged me to read a Sara Teasdale poem entitled “The Falling Star,” out of all the kids in the classroom, she singled me out. Reluctantly, I told her that black folk don’t read or write poetry. I was defiant and rebellious. After she spanked my open palm with a long wooden ruler, I folded and did what she asked. I had until the next day to have the poem memorized. My mother was very strict when it came to my schooling, so I had no choice. I remember staying up half the night reading the poem over and over and over. The very next day I was called to the front of the class, and she demanded that I recite it. Nervously, I did. She was so impressed with my vocal delivery that she entered me into the school talent show. I wasn’t asked. I was just put into it. I recited this poem in front of teachers, a panel, and parents. I had on a light blue pinstriped

And I’m gonna recite ‘The Falling Star’.” My nerves sent me into hysteria. I shook so hard I had to put my hands in my pockets. Everyone looked at me, saying…
