This is, in the end, why this book closes not with commemoration but with a question aimed squarely at the present: if the Golden Age was a system — institutions, funding, an ethic of inquiry, openness to outside learning — then what would it take to build a comparable system now? That question, and not nostalgia, is what history still has to teach us.
